Wilderness Upon Water

The water was a still reflection of glistening trees as I began to gently paddle with sweet, soothing movements that were as natural as an effortless breath. Slowly floating over its surface revealed an elusive population of lake dwellers beneath, close to shore in their secret places beneath gnarled wood and murky, russet water where only the sun's touch in just the right place would reveal a sliver through the curtain to their mysterious world. Calm, peaceful ripples were left in the wake behind me as my vessel skimmed the looking glass upon which I found myself.

Songbirds gliding above offered a gift of melodic greeting as the sun hid behind a thin, mystical veil of cloud cover making known its presence while the morning unfurled itself with its promise of forthcoming heat. Alerted to an intruder in their midst, the activity of the wood and water creatures came to life. From afar, the bright glint of a fishing rod raised high to cast caught my eye from its place on the shoreline.

Weaving between dead, jutting branches and tree trunks in the tall jungle-like grass of low water and tapping my paddle through the obstructions on its winding path, majestic nature blessed by Creation's hand enveloped me. Simple and raw, natural power presented itself before me, complimented with serenity and empowerment. Solitude does not breed fear for fear rarely touches this heart, only the sentiment of respect and awe upon which many would consider unremarkable.

Up-close, treasured encounters with turtles, beavers, fish, cranes and Bald Eagles in their natural element are venerated experiences, tucked away in a sacred trove which enriches the journey of evolution. There is little else that can compare to seeing an enormous crane or Bald Eagle in clear detail and observing the distinct formation of its soaring wingspan from directly beneath as it takes flight above you. It is as inspiring as the discovery of new islands and adventures which invigorate and call to the hearty spirit still lingering within of ancestors long departed from this world.

With each moment outdoors enjoying the height of summer, the deepening of sun kissed skin is etched upon flesh to the extent of that which I thought I had bid farewell to decades ago. Desire to learn and the welcoming openness of perception and observation never lend itself pause. The outer layer stretched across bone and tissue is not so sensitive as it used to be and with each and every second spent in the fresh air of every season, more than just lungs grow strong and healthy.
