When the brutal Wisconsin winter hits and the temperatures drop below zero and into the teens, the cold air often leaves me struggling to breathe deeply. It also leaves me feeling like I'm sometimes struggling with desperation to imagine the feel of the sun and sand of summer again. I wanted to find a way to feel like I spent an afternoon at the ocean, soaking in fresh salty air, even when snow covered the ground outside. My first experience recently with halotherapy in the Chippewa Valley at The Healing Agenda located in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, gave me exactly that—and so much more. Within 15 minutes of entering their massive salt cave, I was able to fill my lungs to full capacity, and the benefits lasted well into the following week.

Why Halotherapy Matters in Winter

Halotherapy, also known as salt therapy, involves breathing in microscopic salt particles in a controlled environment like a salt cave. This practice supports respiratory health by clearing mucus and reducing inflammation in the lungs. For those of us living in cold climates, winter air can be dry and harsh, often triggering congestion or shallow breathing. Halotherapy offers a natural, holistic way to improve lung function and overall wellness during these months.

The salt cave at The Healing Agenda is designed to mimic the microclimate of a natural salt mine or ocean shore. The air is infused with salt particles that gently cleanse the respiratory system. Unlike other treatments, halotherapy is non-invasive and relaxing, making it easy to incorporate into a lifestyle focused on health and balance. The rates are fair and whether you book a solo session to simply mediate in silence or opt to listen to your own playlist on the Bluetooth hook-up provided, it will prove therapeutic on more levels than just the physical. Bring a friend or group. The cave even offers yoga, Qi Gong and other classes. There is plenty of room in the cave!

My Personal Experience

When I arrived early for my session on a chilly Saturday afternoon, the warm welcome of the owner and casual atmosphere immediately put me at ease. I was offered complimentary teas and flavored water as I waited in the reception area on, arguably, one of the most comfortable couches I've ever lounged upon. After I changed into my comfortable salt cave clothing, I removed the slippers I was given to rest the soles of my feet on one of the mini salt dome warmers in the waiting area.

The salt cave was spacious, with comfortable seating and soft ambient lighting that invited relaxation and mimicked the sunset with a warm, earthy palate along with providing more salt domes to warm the feet. It was remarkable. I felt like I had been transported to another time in another land with the combination of sunny salt blocks and the wooden beams and beautiful, rich wooden trim. It was marvelous to be barefoot in the salt, mentally and physically feeling like it was the sand on a beach. There were yoga mats, reading materials, blankets, toys for children (or adults) and a few rakes. I got comfortable in a zero-gravity chair and settled in for a 45-minute session, genuinely curious about how my body would respond before I soaked it in and began to explore the cave.

Within about 15 minutes, I noticed a remarkable change: I could take deep, full breaths without effort. I kept getting to the point where I would pause because I couldn't fill my lungs anymore and had to get accustomed to the feeling that I could actually continue breathing past that point. My lungs felt clear, and I experienced a sense of calm that lasted long after the session ended. My ears didn't have any pressure behind them and the congestion that plagues me during the winter in my sinuses began to fade as well. This deep breathing effect stayed with me for days, helping me feel more energized for my workouts and less congested throughout the week.

It was an awakening as I thought ... have I really been knocking these sessions out with such a limited capacity? How could I have allowed myself not to realize how long this had been dragging on and when did it develop to this extent over the winter months? No wonder I felt like I was struggling. After the salt cave, I was breathing fully outdoors in the fresh air and enjoying my kettlebell workouts and yoga sessions immensely. It was nothing short of invigorating.

The experience went beyond just physical benefits. Spending time in the salt cave felt like a holistic reset—my mind slowed down, there was no desire to connect to the outside world via any medium and I felt more connected to my body’s natural rhythms. This combination of physical and mental wellness made the session a valuable part of my winter health routine. Others have their traditional saunas and cold plunges. I have my Higher Does sauna blanket and now, this amazing salt cave accessibility and experience to lean into moving forward.

Why The Healing Agenda Stands Out

The Healing Agenda offers more than just a salt cave; it provides a complete wellness experience. Their approach is casual and welcoming, which makes it easy for anyone to try halotherapy without feeling intimidated. The facility includes amenities that enhance comfort, such as cozy blankets and an incredibly transparent and friendly staff, creating an environment where visitors can fully relax.

The size of the salt cave is impressive, allowing for social distancing and a peaceful atmosphere even when the space is shared. This makes it a great option for those who want to combine health benefits with a lifestyle that values community and comfort which can be experienced on "Walk-in Wednesdays," which also offers a discounted rate, I believe.

Personally, I enjoy the private sessions or at least keeping them small with a friend. It's just a day at your own little beach on the ocean, after all.

What to Expect When You Try Halotherapy

If you decide to try halotherapy, here’s what you can specifically expect at The Healing Agenda:

  • A calm, quiet environment designed for relaxation unless you bring your own music playlist to connect via Bluetooth. Bet you could even listen to a podcast or guided meditation if you had the inkling. It's your dime.

  • Comfortable seating and blankets, yoga mats, rakes, reading materials, and toys.

  • A gentle mist of salt particles in the air.

  • Sessions are typically 45 minutes.

  • Hydrate before and be ready to hydrate a lot more after your session.

  • Wear loose, breathable clothing (think all cotton) and bring socks if you must. Otherwise, bare feet are acceptable.

  • A feeling of easier breathing during and after the session.

Many people report feeling more energized, less congested, and mentally refreshed. I'm certainly a part of that group. While individual results vary, the experience supports a holistic approach to health by addressing both physical and mental wellness.

Winter Wellness

My first halotherapy session was more than just a way to escape the cold—it was a meaningful part I wish to incorporate into my lifestyle as I focus more and more on holistic health. The Healing Agenda’s salt cave offers a unique space to breathe deeply, relax fully, and support respiratory wellness naturally. Next time I might just bring my yoga practice, breathwork and meditation into the cave.

If winter leaves you feeling stuck in shallow breaths and low energy, halotherapy might be the refreshing change you need.

Consider visiting a salt cave near you to experience the benefits firsthand. Your lungs and mind will thank you for it.

As always, it would be foolish for anyone to try this without first thoroughly researching it and seeing if it is safe dependent upon their own personal health criteria. I am not a licensed health practitioner, nor do I claim to be one. Not that you have that commonsense reminder, I encourage you to please check out The Healing Agenda for yourself here: https://www.thehealingagendaec.com/
